A Fundraising Bike Ride for Re~Cycle
In late July 2011, we set off on our greatest adventure to date: a charity bike ride through 20 countries in 100 days. Our aim was to highlight the work of the bicycle charity, Re~Cycle, and hopefully to raise some money to support their excellent work sending bikes to Africa.
Starting in Rotterdam, Holland, and ending in Ljubljana, Slovenia, our trip took us from the Benelux to the Balkans. Until finally reaching the Greek Island of Thassos before turning back up the Dalmatian Coast.
A Really Big Charity Bike Ride
So, you want to know what it’s like to conquer a charity bike ride like a pro?
Buckle up (or should I say, helmet on!) because I’m about to take you on a wild ride, no pun intended. Picture this: 20 countries, 100 days, and a whole lot of pedalling to power up a cause close to our hearts. That’s right, we’re not just spinning our wheels for fun; we’re spinning them for Re~Cycle, the bikes-to-Africa superheroes!
First things first, you’ll need calves of steel and a sense of humour to survive the thrill and occasional spills of this adventure. It’s not just about the bike, my friend; it’s about the mission. You’ll be zooming through picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and maybe even a few unexpected detours (thanks, Google Maps!).
But fear not, every wobble and wrong turn leads to a story worth telling.
A Bike Based Charity Cycle Picnic
Think of it like a gastronomic tour of Europe’s best street food, except you’re burning calories while consuming them. You’ll savour the sights, sounds, and even the occasional roadside snack (banana, jam and peanut butter for breakfast, anyone?) as you embark on this two-wheeled odyssey. And let’s not forget the camaraderie; cycling across Europe without best mate. What could be better?
But it’s not all smooth cycling; you’ll face your own personal Mount Everest. There’ll be hills that make your heart race faster than the downhill sprint, and weather that tests your dedication (a little rain never hurt anybody, right?). Yet, every ache, every bead of sweat, and every close call with a rogue squirrel is a small sacrifice for the bigger picture – changing lives one pedal at a time.
A Grand Tour of Europe
And when you finally cross that finish line, basking in the euphoria of achievement, you’ll realize it was all worth it. The exhilaration of knowing you’ve contributed to something greater than yourself, that you’ve helped put more wheels in motion for those who need it the most, is an unparalleled high.
So, my fellow adventure-seeker, if you’re ready to trade your cosy couch for a Brooks B17 saddle, and your Netflix binge for an awe-inspiring expedition, gear up and join the ranks of the Re~Cycle crusaders. Trust me, it’s a ride you won’t soon forget, and your heart will thank you for it.
Just don’t forget the padded shorts!
