The Hippie Trail By Bike

Overland from Vietnam to the UK with a Bicycle

In 2015, I undertook a bicycle adventure that I like to call The Hippie Trail by bike. It was by no means a traditional West-to-East journey, but a meandering shamble through Europe, a cheeky flight to Hanoi, then a long, slow human-powered bicycle ride back to the UK.

Cycle Touring the Hippie Trail like an Original 70’s Freak

Welcome, fellow bicycle wanderers and adventure enthusiasts, to a tale woven along the historic Hippie Trail, a route where every bend whispers tales of ancient civilizations and vibrant cultures.

Picture this: crossing 20+ countries, immersing yourself in the ebb and flow of diverse landscapes and civilizations, from the cobbled streets of Europe to the bustling bazaars of India, and the tranquil serenity of Southeast Asia.

Join me as we unlock the secrets of this mythical road, pedalling our way through history, culture, and a tapestry of unforgettable experiences.

The Hippie Trail isn’t just a physical journey; it’s a spiritual awakening, an exploration of self and society.

As the wheels spin and the wind carries the aroma of spices and distant lands, you’re transported into a world where time slows down, and the moments become eternal. This is no ordinary road trip; it’s a pilgrimage for the soul, a quest to understand the interconnectedness of humanity.

Beginnings of The Hippe Trail

Let’s start in Europe, where the Hippie Trail unfolds like a well-worn map leading to hidden treasures. The quaint villages of the Balkans, the majestic Alps, and the bustling streets of Istanbul beckon with promises of adventure and discovery.

Each pedal stroke unveils layers of history, from the remnants of the Ottoman Empire to the tales of ancient trade routes that once crisscrossed these lands.

Cycle Touring Central Asia

As we journey further, the vast deserts and rugged terrains of Central Asia embrace us with their enigmatic charm. The hospitality of the nomadic tribes and the richness of their traditions paint a vivid portrait of resilience and adaptation.

We trade stories around campfires, savouring the simplicity of life under the starry Central Asian skies, a far cry from the urban hustle we’ve left behind.

India; The Spiritual Home of The Hippie Trail

Next, we venture into the heart of India, a sensory explosion of colours, flavours, and spirituality. From the chaotic streets of Delhi to the serene waters of the Ganges, every mile pulsates with life, a symphony of contrasts that both overwhelms and enchants.

Temples, mosques, and bustling markets offer a glimpse into the mosaic of faith and culture that defines this vibrant nation.

Finally, our wheels lead us to the enchanting landscapes of Southeast Asia, where the aroma of lemongrass and the rustle of palm trees welcome us with open arms.

Amidst ancient temples and pristine beaches, we find solace and tranquillity, a much-needed respite after the whirlwind of the journey.

The sunsets paint the sky in hues of crimson and gold, a fitting finale to an odyssey that has left an indelible mark on our souls.

Let the road be your guide, and let the stories you collect along the way be your most cherished souvenirs. After all, the true essence of travel lies not in the destination but in the journey itself. Embrace the unknown, for it is there that you’ll find yourself.
