My Bike Travel Tech Stack: Useful Gadgets for Travelling the World on Two Wheels

Essential digital nomad travel kit that I use to create content on the road

In the early days of my bicycle touring exploits, I was a traditionalist. Travel tech was a new thing, and I was firmly old school. Still am at heart.

Like Jack White, I was an analogue guy. No laptop, no worries.

Analogue bike travel: just a bicycle, a paper map and an appetite for adventure

Since then, I’ve cycled thousands of kilometres across continents. Reliable travel tech has made my journeys better in ways I never imagined. Good gadgets enhance navigation, comfort, and help capture memories.

I’ve persevered in my long-term bike travel experiment, and I still enjoy writing about it. So here we are. It’s totally possible to travel gadget-free, and I dig that, but…

I’m actively building this blog as a means to make a living, and that means I’m documenting my journeys more fully with photography and consequently gathering new kit and making recommendations. Here’s my current travel tech packing list as a bike-based digital nomad:

Navigation & Communication Tech for Travel

Smartphone with Offline Maps

I use my smartphone with apps like Komoot for offline navigation. Planning routes ahead saves data and battery. My old Redmi 9 Power was chosen specifically for its massive battery life and simple Android OS.

GPS Bike Computer

Garmin Edge devices accurately track my route, speed, and distance. They’re rugged and reliable even on bumpy roads.

Local eSIMs or SIM Cards

Staying connected globally is easy with services like Airalo. Local eSIMs keep me online without hefty roaming fees. I use both Jio and Airtel in India at a cost of 300 INR a month.

Content Creation Tools For Travel Bloggers

Action Cameras

My GoPro captures stunning videos and photos. Compact and robust, it’s great for documenting adventures. I’ve heard good things about the Insta 360 and DJI equivalents – take your pick!

Drones

I carry a DJI NEO drone for epic aerial shots. It’s lightweight and offers amazing perspectives. I chose the NEO because it weighs under 250g, which means it is permissible to travel by air without documentation.

If you plan to travel with a drone, do check the local laws – some countries have a complete ban. In particular, when crossing an overland border, you can be searched, as I was in Uzbekistan in 2016.

Data Storage Solutions

MicroSD cards and USB sticks back up my footage. Never lose those special moments.

Entertainment & Comfort

E-Readers

The Kindle Paperwhite lets me carry hundreds of books without extra weight. Ideal for downtime. Reading is one of my go to leisure activities and an e-reader is a luxury I rarely go without.

Portable Speakers

Compact speakers like JBL BOOM provide music during rest stops. Music keeps the spirits high.

Noise-Canceling Headphones

Soundcore Anker Life Q20 headphones help me relax and focus. Perfect after long rides and for flights.

I know this is a massive luxury and a bit awkward to carry on expeditions, but these content creation trips are short and sweet vs multi-year tours.

Essential Accessories for Travel

Cable Organizers

A Weemia cable organiser keeps cords tidy. No more tangles or lost cables.

Multi-Tools

A 16-in-1 bicycle multitool is crucial for roadside fixes. It’s saved me many times.

Travel Water Filter

I tend to take a water filter on most trips these days. It’s just so handy to have, especially when travelling in India as I do; it’s better to pump for ten minutes than to get Delhi belly.

Even after ten years here, it still only takes a sip of the wrong pani, and it’s a long conversation with the giant porcelain telephone.

Conclusion

The right travel tech can transform a bike tour. These gadgets enhance the experience by improving navigation and enjoyment. Choose tech that fits your style.

For me, that means a content creation kit that supports my digital nomad lifestyle. And when it comes to two-wheeled travel, these are the lightest and most practical I have found. Ride on!
