As an expat living in India these are my top picks for winter sports in Asia
For expats in the UAE, India or Southeast Asia looking for winter adventure, these are the ski trips that deliver real snow and big mountains.
For most expats living in Asia, winter means palm trees and beaches. But just a few hours away, the mountains tell a different story. From the Himalayas to the Japanese Alps, Asia has some of the most exciting and affordable skiing on the planet.

This guide is for riders and skiers based in the UAE, India, and Southeast Asia looking for real snow, real adventure, and a new kind of winter escape. These are the ski trips in Asia worth travelling for.
Gulmarg, Kashmir – India’s Wild Winter Frontier
Gulmarg is unlike anywhere else. Perched high in the western Himalayas, it offers some of the deepest snow in Asia. The gondola rises to nearly 4,000 metres, making it one of the highest ski lifts in the world.
I’ve skied Gulmarg in February storms when the snow fell so hard you could barely see the line. The powder was endless. The terrain, raw and untouched. This is not your groomed Alpine resort. This is big-mountain skiing at its most authentic.
For expats based in India or the Gulf, Gulmarg is the easiest place to find serious winter adventure.

Shymbulak, Kazakhstan – Central Asia’s Hidden Gem
Just 25 minutes from Almaty, Shymbulak is one of Central Asia’s best-kept secrets. Wide groomed runs, modern lifts, and a lively local scene make it a great choice for weekend trips.
I’ve skied here several times. The snow is reliable, the vibe relaxed, and the costs far lower than Europe or Japan. For expats in Dubai or Bangkok, flights to Almaty are frequent and affordable.
It’s perfect for mixed groups—some chasing steep off-piste lines, others happy cruising the long groomers with a coffee stop halfway down.

Karakol, Kyrgyzstan – Backcountry Freedom
Kyrgyzstan is for the adventurous. The lifts at Karakol serve beautiful forest runs, but the real magic lies beyond the boundaries. Hire a snowcat or a local guide and you’ll find untouched powder bowls framed by the Tien Shan peaks.
Karakol Ski Base is 3050 meters and offers both extensive piste to enjoy and access to backcountry skiing for advanced skiers.
Karakol feels remote, yet welcoming. You stay in family-run guesthouses, eat hearty mountain food, and spend your evenings in wooden saunas or beside open fires. For expats in India or Southeast Asia, it’s one of the most rewarding offbeat ski trips in Asia.

Gudauri, Georgia – The Gateway to the Caucasus
Georgia has quietly become one of the most exciting ski destinations in the world. Gudauri sits high in the Greater Caucasus, about two hours from Tbilisi. The slopes are wide and scenic, the snow consistent, and heli-skiing is surprisingly affordable.
With more than 80km of trails, Gudauri Ski Resort offers expansive skiing, generous apres and easy access from UAE, India and South East Asia.
After a day on the mountain, you can soak in hot springs or feast on khachapuri and local wine. The culture is warm, the prices fair, and the terrain vast. For expats used to short regional breaks, Georgia is an easy and unforgettable winter escape.

Japan – Powder Heaven
For serious skiers, Japan needs no introduction. Places like Niseko, Hakuba, and Nozawa Onsen get more snow than anywhere else on earth. Dry, light powder falls almost every day through winter.
Skiing in Japan is the holy grail for powder hounds. The variety of resorts and quality of the snow is world famous. Plan your trip here.
Japan is clean, efficient, and welcoming. The onsens are hot, the food sublime, and the snow beyond belief. It’s not cheap, but it’s world-class. For expats in Southeast Asia or Hong Kong, Japan is a must for skiing in Asia.

China – Big Mountains, Big Potential
China has invested heavily in its ski infrastructure, especially around Chongli and Yabuli. Facilities are modern and efficient, and the 2022 Winter Olympics left a legacy of excellent slopes and resorts.
If you’re looking for an adventurous ski trip in Asia, China could be for you. Learn more about Skiing in China here
While it lacks the charm of Japan or the wilderness of Kyrgyzstan, China’s ski resorts are easy to access, well-organised, and perfect for short breaks. As interest in winter sports grows across Asia, China is fast becoming a major player in ski trips from India and the UAE.

South Korea – Fun, Fast and Friendly
Korea’s slopes are smaller, but the energy is big. Resorts like Yongpyong and Alpensia offer night skiing, modern lifts, and a buzzing après-ski scene. It’s ideal for first-timers or families looking for a fun introduction to skiing in Asia.
My daughter is absolutey wild about K-Pop so a ski trip to Korea is high on my wintersports bucket list. Get the low down on skiing in South Korea from PowderHounds or this useful blog post from There She Goes Again.
The infrastructure is excellent, and access from Seoul is effortless. It’s the kind of place where you can ski all day and eat Korean barbecue by night.

Final Thoughts
Asia’s mountains are calling. From the vast Himalayan snowfields to Japan’s deep powder and Georgia’s wild ridgelines, there’s a whole winter world waiting within reach of Dubai, Delhi, and Singapore.
I’ve ridden Gulmarg’s storms and carved Shymbulak’s sunrise slopes. The rest are next.
If you live in Asia and miss winter, these are the skiing trips for expats in the UAE and beyond that will bring it back.
