Maintenance For Hassle-Free Smooth Riding
Maintaining your Triban RC 100 is crucial for ensuring its longevity and optimal performance. Here are some general maintenance tips to help you keep your bike in top condition. I tend towards ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ school of maintenance but there are significant benefits to looking after your bike. Last time I cleaned a bike the frame was snapped. The dirt had been holding it together!
If high performance and shiny shiny is your thing, here’s what you should do:
Regular Cleaning
- Clean the Frame: Regularly clean the frame with a mild soap or bike-specific cleaner and water. This helps prevent the buildup of dirt and grime.
- Clean the Drivetrain: Keep the drivetrain (chain, cassette, and chainrings) clean. Use a degreaser and a brush to remove dirt and old lubricant. Reapply a suitable bike chain lubricant afterwards. An old toothbrush is handy. Rubber gloves too.
Inspection and Adjustment
- Check Tire Pressure: Regularly check and maintain the correct tire pressure. Proper tire inflation ensures a smoother ride and reduces the risk of flats. I tend to run at around 90 PSI on rough roads, 105 on smooth.
- Inspect Brakes: Check the brake pads for wear and replace them if necessary. Adjust the brake tension and make sure the brakes are functioning correctly.
- Inspect and Tighten Bolts: Periodically check all bolts for tightness. This includes bolts on the stem, handlebars, saddle, and crankset.
- Check Gear Shifting: Ensure smooth gear shifting by regularly checking the indexing of the gears. Make adjustments if you notice any issues with shifting. You’ll know from riding if it’s out of whack.
Lubrication
- Lubricate Moving Parts: Apply lubricant to moving parts such as the derailleur pivots, brake pivot points, and any other moving components. Wipe off excess lubricant to prevent attracting dirt.
- Bottom Bracket and Headset: Check and lubricate these components according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. A squirt of olive or coconut oil every now and then will do.
Wheel Maintenance
- True the Wheels: Periodically check and true the wheels to ensure they are straight and don’t wobble. If you’re not comfortable doing this, a bike shop can assist. I only do this if I’ve had a serious crash. You’ll feel when a wheel needs truing. Brakes will catch and its pretty obvious to see a kink.
- Inspect Hub Bearings: Check the hub bearings for smooth rotation. If you notice any grinding or resistance, it may be time to repack the bearings or seek professional help. Cup and cone are easy enough to service – take a look here. Otherwise, leave it be.
General Tips
- Store Properly: Store your bike in a dry place and, if possible, indoors to prevent exposure to the elements.
- Regular Professional Servicing: Consider taking your bike to a professional for regular servicing. They can perform more in-depth checks and maintenance tasks.
- Replace Worn Components: Replace components like the chain, cassette, and brake pads when they show signs of significant wear. Regularly inspect the cables for fraying or rust and replace them as needed.
- Protect from the Elements: If you ride in adverse weather conditions, make sure to clean and lubricate your bike promptly afterwards to prevent corrosion.
By following these maintenance tips and addressing any issues promptly, you can keep your Triban RC 100 in excellent condition. Ensuring a smooth and enjoyable riding experience for many years to come.
The Ultimate Owners Review of the Triban RC 100
Introduction:
The Triban RC 100 is an entry-level road bike designed for beginners and budget-conscious cyclists. I bought mine specifically to ride around north Goa. The roads are rough, mostly gravel and it’s very dusty. The Triban is a cheap and cheerful way to get around.
Key Features of the Triban RC 100:
Frame Material:
The bike features an aluminium frame, providing a balance of durability and lightweight construction. I love the straight steel fork – it looks sporty and rides well.
Groupset:
The Shimano Tourney does the job well and has been trouble free so far. I like that it’s a handlebar shifter and it’s perfect for beginner riders.
Brakes:
The caliper rim brakes are pretty robust and have been reliable in tough conditions.
Geometry:
The Triban geometry offers a comfort-oriented design for riders new to road cycling. I love the high saddle and drop bar combo – it’s a joy to ride.
The First 500km
I’ve loved my Trban RC100. It’s delivered on every point of the spec I had when I bought it. I use my Triban as a daily donkey ride to the beach and back. It gets hammered seven days a week for six months then left in storage for monsoon.
I fitted the baby carrier which has been a gamechanger. My daughter loves it. These things are not yet available in India – mine is from the UK – but I’m sure they’ll catch on. Folks always seem amazed to see a child travel sat in their own seat.
Faster Daddy, Faster!
I find the Triban an easy ride. Comfy for the distance I do – about 15 km a day. Hard wearing – the roads are in bad shape just now; dust, gravel and holes. It’s smooth and simple and easy going.
The thing I would say is that some steeper hills are a challenge on the six speed set up. I’m pretty capable climbing a heavy bike but with 15kg hanging off the back and only. a 44/24 to spin off of, it could be tough for fresh legs.
I give the RC100 an 8 out of 10. Does everything I need and our short adventure rides around town make my daughter very happy. Recommended!
Comparison with Similar Bikes
A few dollars more and you could be riding something a bit sweeter. But that’s same with any hobby or purchase. The new 2023 RC100 has an impressive spec and for the extra $50 I’d go for it. The colours rock and the extra gear may just help you spin the wheels up those savage climbs.
The second-hand market in India is at a premium so it’s rare to find something high spec at a knockdown price. I found buying a second-hand bike frustrating. When I went bikepacking in Ladakh I bought a bike on OLX but it was a bit of a let-down. The cheap disc brakes failed and I had to replace them.
In UK and Europe however, you’ll find decent bikes for cheap on Gumtree and Marketplace. £200 could buy you a fine steel bike but check the wear and tear before making a purchase. A new bike is still the cheapest bike you’ll ever buy.
User Reviews and Testimonials:
Online praise for the Triban includes hefty statements such as ‘Smooth as butter’, ‘Satisfied’ and ‘Excellent Product’ – all five-star ratings on the Decathlon product page.
Final Thoughts:
If you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful pub bike or something to batter on broken roads in the Tropics, like I was, then the RC 100 is a great buy. As an introduction to road riding, this bike is decent. I started out on far less reliable metal.
Great buy for riders in Asia looking to break into road cycling. Shop around if you’re in Europe because you may find a second-hand bargain.
Ease of purchase and availability of parts across India make this a great choice for Expats like me looking for a seasonal beach bike.
