Funny Roads Signs That I’ve Found Hard To Believe In The Indian Himalaya
In this extensive post, I share my favourite funny road signs from my travels across my Himalayan Kingdoms Motorcycle Adventure
I’ve been here on the subcontinent for over a decade. From cycling the high mountains to riding around Goa, I’ve seen my fair share of the nation’s highways and byways.
India’s roads are changing rapidly. No longer are these paths simply about getting from A to B—they’re a statement about India’s economic power and future.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which is responsible for these gargantuan constructions, is a tour de force in the high mountains, undertaking breathtaking infrastructure in the far north as Project Himank.
BRO is India’s unsung hero of connectivity, building roads, bridges, and airfields in some of the world’s most hostile terrains.
Here are 65 funny road signs from India that will amuse, entertain and quite possibly mind-boggle:
Accident Bring Tears Safety Bring Cheers
BRO’s poetic way of saying, “Don’t be daft—keep it safe on the road.” A dash of wisdom with a side of cheer!

Celebrating BRO, The Champion Of Funny Road Signs
Guided by the motto “Shramena Sarvam Sadhyam”—“everything is achievable through hard work”—BRO ensures access to remote regions, bolstering both military operations and local development.
With a history of tackling impossible conditions, from icy mountain passes to dense jungles, this organisation is as much about engineering marvels as it is about national pride.
It’s the perfect blend of grit, resilience, and just a hint of the old-world stiff-upper-lip spirit in its quirky, unforgettably funny road signs.
A collection of some of the most eccentric, sergeant-major-tinged public service announcements you’ll ever encounter.
In my imagination, these signs originate from a bygone era when a British officer might have dictated traffic etiquette while wearing a monocle.
After Drinking Whiskey, Driving Is Riskey
A timeless piece of roadside verse: BRO’s gentle reminder that whiskey and wheels make for a disastrous cocktail.
All Will Wait, Better Be Late
Classic BRO—urging patience with the subtle authority of an army officer. Because lateness is better than neverness.
Always Alert, Avoid Accident
Short, snappy, and very much like BRO: to the point. Alertness isn’t just advised—it’s mandatory.
Be Gentle on My Curves, Feel Them, But Don’t Hug Them
A cheeky bit of road advice, as only BRO could deliver. Flirt with the curves, but don’t get clingy.

Destination Unknown
I found that the higher I travelled up the mountains, the more unnerving the messages became. Sometimes reassuring, at other times alarming. It was as if BRO wanted me to feel ready for anything. Which is precisely what you need to be on these incredibly intense roads.
Difficult Roads Often Lead to Beautiful Destinations
A classic BRO reminder that the tougher the road, the sweeter the reward. It’s as much life advice as it is road advice.
Driving Faster Can Cause Disaster
A no-nonsense warning from BRO, delivered with the gravity of a stern colonial officer. Speed thrills, but it also spills.
Do Not Dirty the Sacred Roof of the World
A poetic plea from BRO, urging travellers to honour the pristine beauty of the Himalayas. Keep it clean, chaps!
Do Not Mix Drinking with Driving
BRO strikes again with its rhyming wisdom—reminding you that mixing spirits and steering is a recipe for disaster.
Do Not Mix Liquor with Speed
Another gem from BRO’s handbook of good sense. It’s not just about slowing down; it’s about steering clear of foolish choices.

BRO doesn’t mince words here. Speed thrills, but it’s rarely worth the final stop.

BRO’s soulful advice for wanderers. Roads are great, but your instincts? Even better.

BRO’s endearing message—bridging Ladakh’s divine beauty with the rest of us mere mortals. The higher you travel into the Indian Himalaya, the more epic the scenery, BRO gets godly.
Funny Road Signs In Ladakh
In the furthest reaches of the Indian Himalaya, the landscape becomes radically different. Ladakh is a place I love very much and the altitude makes it feel as though I’m closer to the heavens. When I bikepacked to Leh, I certainly felt awe-struck as I passed through the Indus Valley into the city.
God Made Ladakh, and We Connect It to the Rest of the World

BRO’s succinct reminder that rushing leads to trouble. A slow pace means a peaceful mind.
I Am Curvaceous, Be Slow
A cheeky yet practical plea from the road itself—handle the curves with care.

Savour the scenery, not the speed—leisure driving is the mountain way.

A cautionary road sign comparing overspeeding to a knife, with the poetic message. Speed thrills but kills; slow down and live to see another day.
Roads Like These
Road Is Hilly, Don’t Drive Silly
If roads could rhyme, they’d probably have a mixtape by now. BRO reminds us that driving recklessly on these treacherous curves isn’t just silly—it’s outright scary!
We Are on Duty So That You Can Enjoy the Beauty
A heartfelt reminder from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). While they’re building breathtaking roads in challenging terrains, all they ask of us is to soak in the view responsibly. Could we BE more pampered?
Safety Is Gainful, Accident Is Painful
A subtle dig at your off-road driving skills disguised as a party prep checklist. No muddy tyres at the disco, folks!
We Will Either Find a Way or Make One
This one screams determination louder than a motivational seminar. Whether it’s carving a road through the Himalayas or convincing a friend to pay for chai, BRO seems to have mastered the art of perseverance.
Simplicity Is the Peak of Civilization
Big Brother vibes? More like Big BRO vibes. A gentle nudge to the accelerator foot: “We see you. Don’t mess it up.”
Don’t Blow This, Gene
You Booze, You Cruise, You Loose
It’s like your favourite rhyme from childhood but with higher stakes. Drink responsibly because even BRO doesn’t want to pick you up from the side of a cliff. The typo, though. It just makes my day every time I see it!
Safety at Road Is Safe Tea at Home
BRO knows our weakness—chai. The promise of a warm, cosy cup at home is reason enough to drive carefully. Who would want to ruin a perfectly good tea plan, right?
Self-Trust Is the Essence of Heroism
BRO going all motivational speaker on us! Channel your inner hero, but remember, even heroes stick to speed limits. After all, self-trust doesn’t mean overtaking a truck on a blind curve.
Simplicity Is the Peak of Civilization
Nothing like a dose of philosophical wisdom at 15,000 feet! BRO keeps it simple, so should you—on the road and in life.
Speed Thrills but Kills
An oldie but a goldie! BRO is serving some dark truth here. Thrill-seekers take note: adrenaline rush is temporary; consequences are not.
STOP!
Stay Alert for Sudden Stop
BRO is like that friend who warns you about plot twists in movies. Except here, the sudden twist could be a yak crossing the road.
Stop Accidents Before They Stop You
BRO coming in with that mic-drop moment. It’s not just a road sign—it’s a life mantra. Take a moment to reflect, and also to brake.
Taglangla Altitude: 17,582 Ft
The sign is humble, but you’re not. At this height, the air is thin, and so is the line between bravery and showing off. Take it slow and soak it in—you’ve earned it! It’s snowed both occasions I’ve summited this pass. At this altitude, there’s not much time to pose. Just a quick snap and down into the valley towards Leh!
We Are in the Land of Gompa
BRO doubles as your travel guide here. Welcome to the land of monasteries and serenity! Just make sure your honking doesn’t disturb the peace.
